COMMENTS: Certainly
one of the most exciting and devastating rookies to
invade the UPW territory lately is this Samoan monster.
But if his present demeanor seems hard-edged and lethal;
a quick study of his own life biography reveals that his
own story is no less riveting than his ring
appearances. Born in the Pacific Islands, this larger
than life ring upstart learned early on the value of
self-defense when many smaller classmates attempted to
pick on him. “If a kid beat me up,” he remembers now,
“my dad would make me fight him again..and if I lost; he
would beat me up even worse. That’s when I learned that
losing was not an option!” Moving at an early age to
Hawaii, Skulu found himself once again relocating to the
mean streets of South Central L.A. when his folks broke
up and his sister had to raise him. Despite a life
threatening auto accident that left him in a body cast
for six months at the age of 7, he soon recovered and
when his sister moved once again; this time to Compton;
it wasn’t long before this pre-adolescent was getting
into trouble; joining a gang called the Park Village
Crypts and engaging in many petty crimes with his
buddies; along with regular fights that would often get
him into conflicts with the law and land his helpless
victims in the hospital.
“I didn’t do much of the drug stuff at first that my
friends were doing but what really turned me on were the
fights. If there was one, I’d always want to be in
it.” And one thing he often requested was that the
fights not be all out brawls but wrestling matches!
“When I broke the arm of one of my buddies wrestling
around though, nobody would want to take me on anymore!”
It was no wonder, though, that Skulu thought grappling
was a cool way to settle disputes as his family heritage
was one rich with mat history. His dad was a good friend
and training partner of the legendary High Chief Peter
Maivia back in the old country, and when the pair met up
again in the Bay Area years later, he insisted on his
old pal joining him on the road. “My mom was against
it, so he never did, but it’s nice to know I am now
starting to carry on that tradition.”
Joining our fed in mid-2001 and quickly becoming an
Ultimate University standout, Skulu “The Samoan Monster”
now delights audiences with his potent size, power and
above all heart and determination. “My life has been a
tough one but I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” says
this big man with the aura of bigger success to come. He
looks forward eagerly to any challenge that the other
big men of So Cal’s biggest indy fed can bring his way
while UPW fans can equally relish the thought of many
resulting great mat encounters to come compliments of
this hungry South Pacific dynamo!
