To all his buds through life, this talented and naturally
comedic athlete was known by his given name James, but
ever since entering the ranks of UPW training, he is now
affectionately known to all as Drunken Irishman. Ever
since the day when superstar Prototype, who he entered
Ultimate U with back in early 2000, sparked the idea for
this naturally hilarious gimmick, DI has taken this ring
persona and run with it to the absolute delight of our
many Ultimate Pro fans.
“I
used to like to trip over the ropes and stumble around for
fun while training so one day Proto said, ‘You’re Irish,
aren’t you? Why not call yourself the Drunken Irishman?’
and ever since then I have worked harder and harder to
become that character.” And for James, who himself was a
very serious sports competitor in his earlier days;
winning three consecutive high school amateur state
championships, this has already brought many rewards as he
hears the guffaws and loud chuckles of appreciating
audiences. So how does he enrich his raucous routine,
bringing it even further to the ultimate. “I work security
at the Galaxy every night, so that’s a natural place to
see people who might have just a bit too much to drink and
I observe them and study how foolish they may act at times
too.”
A native of the Los Angeles area, James lays unusual claim
to being present at the first Wrestlemania back in 1985
with his dad and family, as they made a long but amazingly
memorable trip to New York’s Madison Square Garden to see
the likes of early favorites like the Hulkster, Cowboy Bob
Orton and Adrian Adonis. Such a devotion to the sport
blossomed soon into his ultra-successful high school mat
career and inevitably to training at Ultimate University
and an early entrée into matches against some top UPW
contenders.
Sidelined for over a year by a freakish hip injury
suffered during a lightweight championship match, Drunken
Irishman has now fought his way back and while
courageously battling physical adversity, he has also
continued to redefine and perfect not only the laughs but
also an ever growing lethal arsenal of moves.
So
fans and Ultimate Pro competitors alike: Make no mistake
about it: When DI steps..or should we say…stumbles into
the ring…his opponent must never be distracted by what may
seem hilariously confused antics; for if he turns his back
even for one brief moment, it is the wily Drunken One who
will always, always have the last laugh!
