Japan
Diary
- Part # 1
By
Marty Rubalcaba
Greetings,
Sorry it’s taken so
long to finally put his down. Returning
back to “normal” takes time.
Please note “
states a Japanese person was speaking tome. On with the diary:
09/09/02: Keiji
and I arrived at LAX at 9:20 AM way ahead of schedule just to make
sure we made our flight on time we also wanted to beat any delays. As we waited for the rest of the guys to arrive we had some
coffee from the local Mc Donald’s (it was the worst!) As I threw away the coffee Skulu showed up and asked if we
had seen Tom Howard yet? Apparently
Tom had Keiji and Sculu’s airline tickets.
Predator then showed up, said hello, but moved through the
check in counter, he wanted to check in early to try and get a last
row seat so he could sleep on the plane ride over to Japan.
We waited for Tom to arrive with Keiji and Sculu’s tickets,
it was getting later, Tom was due to arrive at the airport at 10: 45
AM, it was 10:45 AM and no Tom to be seen or found?
As we sat and waited and waited Skulu called Rick Bassman to
ask if he had heard from Tom, Rick stated Tom would be at the airport
within five minutes, five minutes turned into 11:50 AM.
Tom arrived at the ticket counter and gave Keiji and Skulu
their tickets. As we
waited (see a trend here?) to check our luggage Tom recommended we
fill out a frequent miles club card, as we all stumbled to write
legibly as we stood we were called up to check our luggage.
As I checked in I showed my identification and passport, but
was told to hold a moment? Apparently
the counter person had to call over her supervisor to clear me through
to board the plane? My
airline ticket said MARTY, but my identification and passport said
MARTIN…the supervisor stated “ name, not same on passport and
ticket” Great, I can’t go to Japan because of my name?
I told the supervisor it was my first time to Japan I didn’t
know my name was different please let me go this time?
She agreed and handed me my passport and boarding pass off I
was to land of the Rising Sun…so I thought?
We had to pass yet another security check and then wait another
20-minutes to board the plane, Tom offered to get some peanuts and
water to kill some time. We
were finally able to board the plane, but come to find out we were all
scattered through the plane. Tom
was in the front. Predator and I were in middle, Keiji and Sculu in
the back somewhere? As I
found my seat (a middle seat) to my left was a man and his child and
to my right was a lady (all ready sleeping, and leaning on ME!!) the
child was crying and running through the aisles, and we hadn’t even
taken off yet!! I asked
myself, self? Are you
going to tolerate this on your first trip to Japan, HELL NO!!
Keiji saved me. He came to get me as we were in the air, Keiji had lucked out
and got a row all to himself. He
asked if I wanted to move?
Keiji didn’t have to ask me twice.
As we took off, I noticed that the plane was equipped with
video cameras that allowed you to see the take off and landing, great
if we went down we had the pleasure of seeing what we would be
smashing into. You have
to love modern technology. The
plane was also equipt with video monitors that informed you of how
long the flight would be, which was AWESOME!
Here I was amazed by the fact I was actually going to Japan to
do what I love to do, wrestling!
After two hours in the air, we were given a little something to
snack on, as we all know airline food is what it is.
Tom and Predator recommended I get some sleep on the flight.
I would need it. As
I tried sleeping (which I couldn’t) due to the excitement of going
to Japan. Here it was 9:00 PM (west coast time) and I couldn’t sleep.
I had been up since 5:00 AM and would be up the whole flight,
our flight left LAX at 1:17 PM 09/09/02 and wouldn’t get into Tokyo,
Japan until 4:30 PM 09/10/02 the next day! Talk about traveling forward in time, it’s done everyday
but it isn’t big news? Trying
to make the best of this 16-hour flight, I enjoyed the free movies and
video games available to me. I
had eight channels to choose from, Japanese music, News, Television.
It also featured television shows such as “Friends” in
Japanese four movie channels that featured a small selection of
movies: CLOCKSTOPPERS / LORD OF THE RINGS / ICE AGE / WASABI /
CINDERELLA 2 / LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT / SPIDER-MAN.
Spider-Man kicks ass, I’m sorry I didn’t see it in the
movie theater. I also
watched CLOCKSTOPPERS, with French Stewart of 3rd Rock from
The Sun fame. (French by
the way is AWESOME!! At Wrestlemania 2000 he gave my daughter Shandi
his Wrestlemania souvenir chair) One thing I learned as we were in
flight is that Japan is 16-hours ahead of us (California) I also
learned that our flight headed north towards Alaska, that blew me
away. Japan is north of
California. We passed
just off the coast of Anchorage; Alaska and we could see it from the
plane. As I wrote this we
were 1,171 miles outside of Tokyo, Japan at 9:33 PM.
I can’t wait to get to Japan and see it for the first time.
Who would of thought that a referee would be going to Japan to
do what he loves (NOT ME!!) It
proves that DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!
We finally arrived in Japan!!!
It was 2:30 AM California time.
We landed and the plane taxied to an area and we were shuttled
of onto buses that were parked outside of the plane.
We boarded the buses and were driven to the terminal, which
seemed like a 20-minute ride. As
we arrived at the terminal it was another wait for us (see a trend?) As we waited another 45-minutes inside the terminal at Japan
Customs. It was finally
my turn to reach the customs desk and as I finally reached the desk,
the customs officer asked “what your business in Japan?”
I stated wrestling and then he asked “where you stay, and who
you stay?” The customs
officer stated he “need name and number for wrestling?” Lucky me,
I didn’t have a number or knew where I was staying, and the worst
part was that Tom, Predator and Skulu had already passed though
customs and had all the information!!
I smiled and stated “first time in Japan and happy to be
here” The officer looked at me as if I crazy, then smiled stamped my
passport and said “OK, you go” Here I was in a country far from
home and was sweating bullets, my first experience of being unable to
communicate, BUT not my last…Keiji was right behind me and was
called to the booth next to me, but he wasn’t so lucky.
Keiji apparently got an agent who wanted information.
He asked Keiji the same questions his partner asked me.
Keiji had nothing. The
officer asked Keiji “step out of line, and come” As Keiji was
asked to step into the customs office I ran downstairs to get Tom.
I asked Tom what did we have to do to get Keiji out of the
customs office. Tom
laughed and stated Keiji had gotten a (by the book officer) not to
worry. Tom gave me a
ZERO-ONE business card with all the information they needed.
The officer called the ZERO-ONE office to see if Keiji was in
fact there to see them. After the officer hung up the phone he told Keiji “ you no
wrestle, only train” With that chaos behind us we were then allowed
to head to baggage claim.
