I was both honored and excited when Andre Mouchard,
Features Editor for the Orange County Register, phoned me
unexpectedly and asked if I'd be interested in writing a column for
the Orange County Register. "Um, sure," I said hesitantly,
envisioning a little blurb this side of the Classifieds, recounting
TV ratings for ESPN Kickboxing. I'd worked with Andre from
time to time over the years, doing a little thing for the Business
Section here, and a bit for the Sports section there. "So
Andre, what do you want me to do?" I was tempering my enthusiasm,
lest Mr. Mouchard burst my bubble. You see, I've always wanted
to write --unedited-- about my experiences in the wacky worlds of
Professional Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts, and share my
philosophies in the process. And I was looking for an excuse
to do it. (Don't we all think we have a book inside us after all?
Well, I'm no exception, but....ha!). Excuse me, I digress.
"Write whatever you want" Andre said, "and we'll put in the the
Lifestyles Section!" Ok, this is too good to be true. So
now, the challenge. Write every week, and keep it fun, fresh
and compelling. Andre, thank you for the opportunity.
And to those who read my column, thank you thus far for your e-mails
and support. Sup!?! |

outback and unwittingly lead a 6'5", 300 lbs. maniacal lamb to
slaughter at the hands of a 6', barely-200lbs.-soaking-wet--balding
man, named...Randy Couture.

"Abject Fear and Total Exhilaration in the Land of the Rising Sun"
May 5, 2008
In which I recall meditating with monks on a mountaintop at sunrise in
Japan, watching "Gone With The Wind" with subtitles, and shaking in
my bare feet for my epic "battle" with the legendary Shinya
Hasahimoto.
