We’ve received A
LOT of feedback from both our fans and from the
wrestling media on our “Weekly Wire,” mostly all of it very
positive. Who knows, The Weekly Wire just may prove to be a legitimate
tool by which to build a real, grass-roots promotion. Once again, I want to thank you all for your support; we
absolutely could not do
it with out you.
Tim “Murphy”
McDermott and Todd Keneley continue to do a fabulous job not
only meeting this demanding weekly deadline, but making
“The Wire,” - in my opinion - compelling and very
readable.
With so
many shows booked, we finally have the opportunity to book
and maintain programs; which our writer/bookers have been
chomping at the bit for a long time now.
Murphy and Todd again deserve a big commendation
here, as does long-time contributor Marty Rubalcaba.
I hope you’ll follow
the development of our programs, over the Internet and on
video, over the coming months.
I’m confident you’ll see the unfolding of a
consistent and compelling product!
Our “jobs” cross-over
a lot here at UPW. In
fact, most everyone has other
full-time jobs. So,
it amazes and constantly inspires me how guys like Murphy,
Marty and Todd not only continue to contribute, but do so
actively and enthusiastically.
The same goes for Ron McIntyre and Stacey Lee Herren
at Sonicfish, who
are responsible for (amongst many other things), ramping up
both the output and quality of UPW video.
Eventually, this work will pay off.
And of course, one of longest-enduring contributors,
Les Honig, Assignment Editor/Writer-extraordinaire, who has
been with us in so many capacities from almost the
beginning.
This week, Tom
Howard, Sylvester
“Predator” Terkay, Televise
“Skulu” Masalosalo and Jimmy Snuka, Jr. are doing a
great job representing UPW at Zero-One.
All continue to solidify their stardom in the land of
the rising sun!
Tom’s
been very visible recently.
On tour with Zero-One
of course, and in appearances in “Daredevil” and in the
final, record-breaking episode of “Joe Millionaire.”
I always look forward to doing more stuff as time
progresses, as I believe we share many of the same goals and
sensibilities (or lack thereof!)
When Van
“Shaolin Punk” Ayasit left the US to relocate to
Japan to train at the Zero-One dojo, many of us here were
concerned about his very survival in one of the toughest
programs on earth. Not
only in Van surviving…..he’s thriving.
The re-named “Vansack Acid” is quickly becoming
one of the country’s hottest junior prospects!
Just this morning, I was
lobbying Pro Wrestling Illustrated Magazine for UPW’s regular
monthly inclusion in the Rankings pages.
I realized a couple of things when submitting our Top
10. While some
may argue that a select few promotions -- such as ROH --
have the best work-rate of the indies (an argument I would
gladly participate in on behalf of the UPW locker room!),
here’s one thing for sure…..The average height of our
Top 10 submissions is 6’3”; the average weight is 265
lbs.; and every
single one on this roster looks awesome.
I truly believe that UPW has the single most
impressive locker room in the business this side of WWE.
If you want to verify this for yourself, check our Superstars
page.
It is largely because of
this physicality, and of course, due to work-rate,
attitude/professionalism/dedication and promo ability, that
I think UPW will have a record year delivering prospects to
WWE. I firmly believe that Frankie
Kazarian, Ryan
“Keiji” Sakoda., “Hardkore
Kidd” Aaron Aguilera, Matt
“Horshu” Wiese and “Outlaw”
Mike Knox are next on that list.
Don
“Hollywood” Yates
continues to participate on an almost full-time basis in the
equally challenging worlds of Pro Wrestling and Rodeo.
I just can’t understand why this very tough
individual doesn’t Base Jump in his “free” time.
I hear rumors that “The
Miracle” Mikey Henderson is re-dedicating himself to
pro wrestling. It’s
amazing, Mikey’s been a kid / prodigy for what seems like
many, many years, but is actually still only 23.
I’ve said it time and again, with his head in the
right place, I think The Miracle is one of the best
prospects in the business
So, what exactly is up
with our Women’s
Division anyway? We
suddenly have so
many physical,
tough, attractive, positive female prospects here in
Southern California who are taking a shot at the
business…..Erica
“Jungle Girl” Porter, Melina “Kyra” Perez,
Joelle Ward, Melissa
Coates, Shelly “Desire” Martinez, Midajah and of
course Sacha
“Savvy” Bryant and Jenny
“Looney” Lane, as well as a couple of very hot
newcomers – Jennifer Turner and Maritza Franco.
In my mind, each and every one of these young ladies
has the potential
to go all the way. So
what do they have to do?
Practice, practice, practice!
I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring to
the rest of 2003, and conversely, to what 2003 brings to
them in the way of opportunity in pro wrestling. On this note, a special commendation to the very humble and
dedicated Nikki Tsugranes;
injured or not, we see her 4
times a week at Ultimate University!
With many of our top UPW
Superstars in Japan, this past week was still nonetheless a
“who’s who” at Ultimate University.
Keiji
Sakoda, Frankie
Kazarian, Aaron
Aguilera, Shane
& Shannon Ballard, Samoa
Joe Seanoa, Lil’
Nate, Mike
“The Miz” Mizanin, Andrew
Hellman, Scott
Lost, Shane
“Hawaiian Warrior” Roberts, Lamar
“Sabbath” Tinin, Mike
“Outlaw Marshall Knox” Kirkhart and James
“Drunk Irishman” Prentiss were amongst the many in
refining their crafts.
This Saturday, Roddy
Piper will join Keiji
in teaching both our 2:00 and 4:00 classes, and in booking
and critiquing our weekly Lite
Show; it should be awesome!
More
next month on some deep-behind-the-scenes happening and on
the unfolding of our very special show at The
Grove of Anaheim on April 25, featuring my favorite –
the 22-man-Battle Royal.
See you soon,
Rick
